Matthew 20:1-16

This parable immediately follows Peter’s comments about what he and the disciples have given up to follow Jesus (verse 1 – ‘For the kingdom…’  - when you see ‘For’ or ‘Therefore’ it’s worth asking what its ‘there for’).  So Jesus tells this story about what His kingdom is like.

Reading the passage / thinking about what you heard in Sunday’s service, what strikes you about the story Jesus tells?

Describe what’s happening in the passage.

What does the passage tell you about…

The workers?

  • How are we sometimes like the workers?

  • (Hint! – think about times you have had disappointed expectations / been under-appreciated compared with other people / not got what you think you were entitled to – how did this make you feel? TD Roosevelt – ‘Comparison is the thief of joy’)

The landowner?

  • How is God’s way of dealing with us like the landowner?

  • (Hint! – think about who God is and what he has made us in Jesus – Colossians 3:3 – how does this make you feel?)

What can help us to live in the light of this passage?

  • (Hint! – Think about what Jesus has made you - Colossians 3:12; Romans 13:13; Galatians 3:26-27)

Pray together.
