Matthew 18:21-35
There was a well-known teaching from Rabbis at the time of Jesus that said you should forgive someone three times and no more.
When Peter says in verse 21 ‘Shall I forgive up to seven times’, what is he suggesting?
Peter has heard Jesus say that his righteousness must surpass that of the Pharisees (Matthew 5:20).
Just how much is Jesus expecting our righteousness to surpass that of the Pharisees is highlighted in verse 22? ‘Seventy times seven’.
What do you think Jesus means by this?
The Parable
What strikes you about the parable?
What does the King tell us about God?
What does the unmerciful servant tell us about us?
What does the HUGE amount of debt that the servant is in tell us about the debt that we owe God?
What does God think about unforgiveness?
What does this parable tell us about the Gospel and God's amazing grace?
Is there someone you need to say sorry to?
Is there someone you need to forgive?
Pray together.
