Bible
On Sunday, Brogan preached from John 16. He showed how Jesus answers three big questions: How can I live with uncertainty? How can I know the truth? and How can I live well? We were reminded that Jesus doesn’t give us a perfect revelation of what will happen next in our lives in advance - but instead gives us the Holy Spirit to be with us and guide us. The Spirit leads us into all the truth, now recorded in Scripture, so we can live with confidence even when life is costly. Finally, Brogan showed how the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - models the kind of life we were made for: submission without oppression, glory without boasting, and ownership without greed.
Study Q's for this week:
1. Fixing Your Eyes on the Saviour
Question:
Jesus warns that knowing too much - whether about future suffering or future honour - could distract the disciples from him. Why is it so important to fix our eyes on the Saviour rather than our circumstances?
Apply it: Think of one area of uncertainty or ambition in your life. What would it mean to focus on Christ in the midst of it?
2. The Spirit Will Lead You Into All the Truth (John 16:13; 2 Timothy 3:16–17)
Question:
Jesus says the Spirit will lead his people into “all the truth.” How do John 16:13 and 2 Timothy 3:16–17 help us understand the connection between the Spirit and Scripture?
Apply it: How does knowing that the Bible is God's word, rather than speculation, or a time bound message, change your approach to costly discipleship?
3. Submission Without Oppression (John 16:13)
Question:
In the Trinity, the Spirit submits completely to the will of the Son and the Father - but is never diminished. How does this model challenge and enrich your view of submission and power in relationships?
Apply it: Where in your life could you practise Christlike humility and honour others without fear of being taken advantage of?
4. Glory Without Boasting (John 16:14)
Question:
The Spirit glorifies Jesus, yet Jesus never boasts or self-promotes. What does this reveal about true glory and how it should be handled?
Apply it: Are there ways you seek affirmation or recognition? What would it look like to rest in God's glory rather than seek your own?
5. Ownership Without Greed (John 16:15)
Question:
Jesus says, “All that belongs to the Father is mine.” How does the generous sharing within the Trinity challenge the way we think about ownership, possessions, and responsibility?
Apply it: What’s one area of your life - time, money, home, energy - that God might be inviting you to hold with open hands for the sake of others?
