Bible Study (30 mins)

Read Acts 2:36-41 together:

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

What things, other than Jesus, do you tend to put your faith in?

Ben spoke about:

1) The importance of faith in Jesus (v36-38)

What are the results of faith in Jesus?

2) The promise of faith in Jesus (v39)

Peter says that faith in Jesus is a PROMISE. It is received, rather than achieved. It was promised, even when we were far off. How does this change the way you think about faith?

Faith is a gift. Spend some time asking for the gift of faith together.

3) The sufficiency of faith in Jesus (v40-41)

Faith saves us. It is not the strength of our faith that saves us, but who our faith is in!

In what ways is this good news for you today?

Jesus said: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.”

Mark Batterson said this:

There comes a moment when you must quit talking to God about the mountain in your life and start talking to the mountain about your God. You proclaim His power. You declare His sovereignty. You affirm His faithfulness. You stand on His Word. You cling to His promises.

What mountains do you need to speak to about Jesus? Remember, it is not the quality of your faith that makes a difference, but it is who your faith is in.

Hebrews 11 (we are going to continue to look at this passage next week so don’t worry if you run out of time. Perhaps ask your group to look at this passage this week at home?)

In Hebrews 11, Paul lists a great hall of fame of people who lived out extraordinary faith.

In your context, what does it look like for you to be full of faith?

In verse 6 the author of Hebrews wrote: “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Why does it please God that we are people of faith? Remember, faith is a gift. Ask that God would give the gift of faith to each of you today.

Prayer

Response (10 mins)

A mountain is anything that masquerades as an impossibility.  Ben shared that instead of speaking to our God about how big our “mountains” are, we are to speak to our “mountains” about how big our God is and tell them to move (Matt 21:21).

Prayer (20 mins)

Faith is a gift. Ask and receive faith. Then activate it by praying faith-filled prayers for each other this week. Pray for more than you can ask or imagine.
