Reflection
The Psalmist seems out of his depth and overwhelmed by the attack of the enemy, writing from a place of fatigue and weakness. He calls out to God: ‘Save me, O God, For the waters have come up to my neck.’ This reminded me of Peter reaching out to Jesus for help when he walks out on the water. Similarly, our current climate is super scary; feeling too vast for our human solutions to cope with. By the end of the Psalm, the writer has come to realise the promises of Gods goodness: God WILL save! I think we are to be reminded that when we feel overwhelmed, Gods mighty hand covers us and pulls us up.
God’s truth stands firm.
In this season, our lives have been stripped back and we have had to hand over control to God, whether it is family members health, income or the simple issue of finding milk and bread. In Genesis 22, Abraham is tested as to whether he would sacrifice is only son, Isaac, in order to glorify God. Abraham is an image of God the Father; He sent his only son, Jesus, to die for us in order to be the perfect sacrifice, removing all our sin and shame.
Are we like Abraham, willing to follow God in a sacrificial way? God blesses Abraham in his willingness to serve and do anything to be closer to Him, he pours the same blessing over us.
Prayers
Heavenly Father, I pray that we would call to you for help in this season.
I pray that we would trust in your promise, you are an all-powerful God who saves and cares for His people. Help us to hand over our fears and worries, receiving in return your unwavering peace and hope.
We lift up our suffering world and pray you would protect those most vulnerable. We pray strength over key workers and volunteers and we pray that your sacrificial love would permeate through the streets of our nation and worldwide.
Father, show us what we need to let go of and give over to you, we trust that you will surely bless us in that.
Fill us with your Holy Spirit, to be an example of you Jesus on this earth,
Amen.
Collect
Almighty Father,
Look with mercy on this your family
For which our Lord Jesus Christ was content to be betrayed
and given up into the hands of sinners
and to suffer death upon the cross;
Who is alive and glorified with you
And the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and for ever.
Amen.
