Song Suggestion: Hosanna (Praise is Rising)

Bible

Read Mark 11:1-11.

  • Who do you identify with most in this story - the disciples, Jesus, the donkey, or the crowd?

  • In this passage we see the juxtaposition between royalty and suffering. In your life, is Jesus more royal king or suffering servant?

  • The context of this passage reveals that Jerusalem is the place where “kings are crowned and God is met”, and that donkeys were considered royal animals in ancient Israel. Why are these symbols important for us as Christians today?

  • Some Jews were looking for a warrior Messiah to overthrow the Romans. Some were looking for a king who would have great wealth and power and demand obedience. But Jesus was not this kind of Messiah. Where have we placed false characteristics onto Jesus?

  • The cry of “Hosanna” means “save me/us” - what sin and suffering do you need saving from?

  • Jesus identifies with our brokenness as the suffering servant. But as king of universe, he has power to heal. How does this impact our lives?

Prayer

Pray for one another, that we can recognise our own brokenness and need for Jesus’ salvation and rejoice in knowing Jesus as our suffering servant and our royal king.

Pray for the Easter Cafe on Saturday, that many in the city of Newcastle discover hope in Jesus Christ.
