Discussion

  1. Paul contrasts Hagar and Sarah to explain the Old and New Covenants. How does understanding these covenants help you make sense of what it means to live as a Christian today?

  2. The Hagar story represents human effort and self-reliance, while Sarah represents trust in God’s promise. Where in your life are you tempted to “take matters into your own hands” instead of waiting on God’s promise?

  3. Paul describes Hagar’s child as born “according to the flesh” and Sarah’s as born “through the Spirit.” What might it look like in practical terms to live “by the Spirit” rather than “by the flesh”?

  4. Spiritual life, as a Christian, is found not in keeping a law like a slave but rather coming before the law giver but as his child. What would change in your outlook, your worship, or your sense of identity if you lived every day as God’s beloved child rather than as His servant trying to earn approval?

Prayer

Pray for each other to have hearts that live in the freedom, confidence, and joy of being children of God rather than slaves to law or performance.
