Bible
Jesus’ ascension as a human being (v9) opens up heaven to humanity once and for all, and gives the Christian complete certainty about their heavenly future.
Do you have this certainty?
What gets in the way of you experiencing certainty?
Jesus still has scarred hands in his ascended, glorified body.
What does this teach us about how we view our pain and suffering, in the light of the New Creation?
How does this change our attitude to putting ourselves at risk (be that from mockery all the way to physical pain, like Jesus) for the sake of participating in God’s work?
The disciples (v6) want Jesus to keep bringing about the kingdom. In verse 8, though, he tells them that they are the ones to be clothed with power and to be His witnesses. The ascension marks a shift in the ministry of Jesus. No longer is his ministry confined to one place at one time, but rather it is continued by every Christian everywhere. Your purpose is to continue Jesus’ work (preaching the gospel, healing the sick, and driving out darkness).
Have you settled for less than God’s purpose for you?
In the ten days between the promise of the spirit (v4) and the day of Pentecost, the disciples joined together constantly in prayer (v14) and praised God in the temple (Luke 24:53).
How good are you at waiting?
What are you waiting for God to do?
How does the example of the disciples’ waiting inspire you?
Prayer
Pray for one another, specifically for the things you are waiting for.
