Isaiah 64:1-9

Aim

Just like the people in Isaiah's day, we sometimes stray away from God and our hearts become hard. All is not hopeless. If we will turn back to God and ask Him to forgive us, He can mould us and shape us into what He wants us to be. God is still the potter and we’re still the clay!

Watch

Game

One-minute mini potters - using clay or play dough (see recipe to make your own below…)

Set a timer (you decide for how long). Create the following objects before the timer goes off:

  • vase

  • flowers

  • table

  • house

  • horse

Discussion

Based on the bible passage for today, Isaiah 64:1-9.

Explain what happens when you leave playdough out for a long time - it dries out. It then becomes difficult to mould into what you want.

This is just like what was happening to God's people during the time of the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah is very upset and is begging God to come and change the hearts of his people. "We have sinned and turned away from You and You have become angry with us. How can we be saved? No one calls on Your name or pleads for Your mercy. You've turned away from us."

Sounds a hopeless situation, but Isaiah didn't think so. He knew if the people would turn back to God, He could mould them and shape them into what He wanted them to be - just like clay. Isaiah said to God, "Oh Lord, you’re our Father. We’re the clay, and You’re the potter. We’re formed by your hand. Please don't be so angry with us. Look at us and see that we’re Your people." Isaiah knew that even though the hearts of God's people had become hard, God could still mould them into what He wanted them to be.

At this point - you can use your playdough to mould a heart.

Just like the people in Isaiah's day, we sometimes stray away from God and our hearts become hard. All is not hopeless. If we will turn back to God and ask Him to forgive us, He can mould us and shape us into what He wants us to be. God is still the potter and we’re still the clay! Hold the heart you made between your hands while we ask God to mould our hearts.

Memory verse

But Lord, you are our father.

We are like clay, and you are the potter.

Your hands made us all.

- Isaiah 64:8

Craft ideas

1. Modelling - using clay, play dough (you can even make your own using flour: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/playdough-recipe)

Make a model of yourself and whoever else in your household - remember that we are all created by God.

2. Draw around your hands. In the middle of each hand, write ‘WE ARE IN HIS HANDS’. Decorate and then display as a reminder that we are always in God’s hands.

Prayer

Dear God, forgive us when we go astray. Take us in your hands and shape us into what You want us to be. In Jesus' name, amen.
