Paul wrote Colossians in the context of the people in the church "DIYing" their faith and picking and choosing which bits about Jesus they wanted to believe in them. Some of the church were even engaging in worship of angels.

Recalibrates Our Hearts (v. 9-14) and the Creed

  • How does the passage's emphasis on rescue from darkness and being brought into the kingdom of light help us to "recalibrate" our hearts when we're tempted to stray from the foundational truths of our faith?

Grounds Our Faith (v. 15-20) and the Creed

Paul presents Christ as the Creator and sustainer of all things, mirroring the Creed's declaration of Jesus's divine nature and Lordship.

  • How does this description of Christ's supremacy in the passage "ground" our faith against the temptation to build our beliefs on anything less than the truth of who Jesus is?

Guards Our Unity (v. 12 and sermon context) and the Creed

Paul mentions sharing in the inheritance of God's people, a concept echoed in the Creed's emphasis on the "one holy catholic and apostolic church."
