Reflection
Psalm 113 talks of the invitation to all people to praise God, because he is a God that cares about all times, places, people and situations.
‘Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore’ (v2). God is the same yesterday, today and forever - he never changes, and so our praise to Him should never change either.
’From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised’ (v3). God is the same no matter where we are - whether we’re gathered in a church building, sat in front of our TV or out enjoying His creation. So wherever we find ourselves, let’s praise God, because he’s right there with us.
‘The Lord is exalted over all the nations’ (v4). God is over all nations, not just a select few. He cares about all people, no exceptions. So let’s continue to invite others to experience the love of God and join the family of those praising Him.
‘He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people’ (v7 & v8). God cares for the poor and the princes. Whether the situation we’re currently facing feels like we’re in the ash heap or sat on a throne, let’s praise God. Life has mountaintops and valleys low, but God is the constant through it all.
Prayers
God,
Thank you that you stay the same through the ages. Thank you that no amount of time, expanse of space, nation of people or worldly situation can change your perfect love. In the times when we struggle to worship you because of what’s going on around us, would you help us to put aside our distractions and focus solely on praising you.
Amen.
Collect
Almighty and everlasting God,
By whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified:
Hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people,
That in their vocation and ministry
They may serve you in holiness and truth
To the glory of your name;
Through the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
Who is alive and reigns with you,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and for ever.
Amen.
