Reflection
Today’s psalm is one of the most well-known passages of the bible - the Lord is my Shepherd. It is one of the most beautiful images of God in the Bible.
This Psalm is one of trust - even though the author, King David, is going through some rough times - the shadow of death even - his trust in God is such that he is able to say to God in verse 4 “You are with me”. These are the central words of the Psalm - the words that all the others hinge on.
We know from the New Testament that Jesus is our true Shepherd (John 10, Hebrews 13). Jesus is the only one who can Shepherd and lead us to ultimate peace and security - to eternal green pastures (v2). Only he will lead us along the right path (v3). In fact, he is the only way, the only truth and the only life (John 14:6).
Over this past year I have known Jesus to be my Shepherd. It has been a year of incredible highs, but also some real lows. But God has been there through it all - leading me. There is no one else to follow! I have known his refreshing (verse 3) and his comfort (verse 4). Like the Psalmist, this is why I know that God’s goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life (verse 6).
In verse 5, David says his head is anointed with oil. This was done to the most honoured guest at a banquet in the middle East. God anoints me too. He anoints you. You are loved, cherished and for those of us who trust in Jesus, we shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever (verse 6).
Prayers
For our prayers today, watch and listen to this amazing song, written by my friend Lauren, and meditate on the words that come directly from this Psalm.
Thank you God for your goodness, mercy and love. May we always know your goodness following us, forever.
Amen.
Collect
Almighty Father,
Who in your great mercy gladdened the disciples
With the sight of the risen Lord:
Give us such knowledge of his presence with us,
That we may be strengthened and
Sustained by his risen life
And serve you continually in righteousness and truth;
Through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
Who is alive and reigns with you,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and for ever.
Amen.
