Spiritual Disciplines
Week 5 - Bible Reading
Opening discussion about the practice
You can find all the information about the practice, and loads of resources relating to the sermon series at stthomas.church/disciplines.
How did you find the talk on Sunday?
The practice this week was to try reading the Bible for the first time if you were new to it. Was this you? How did you find it?
If you're not new to reading the bible: what is your pattern of Bible reading, and how does that inform your faith?
This may be as far as your group gets. If so, that's fine!
Bible study
Read Luke 24:13-35 together.
What does this passage tell us about the Bible?
The disciples hearts 'burn within them' on the road. What is happening here? Is it just their conscience or is this a spiritual experience?
Where else in the Bible do we see the theme of fire or a change of heart? What does this tell us about how we should approach scripture?
Prayer & community
Share how your bible reading is going: commit to how you might like God to change that in the coming weeks, and what you're doing to do in response.
Pray for each other, for the Holy Spirit to strengthen us to read the word together.
Closing prayer
Blessed Lord,
who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning:
help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them
that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word,
we may embrace and for ever hold fast
the hope of everlasting life,
which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
