The Parable of the Tenants

Jesus is a few days from being killed. Yesterday He threw corrupt traders out of the Temple, and today the religious leaders ask Him what authority He has to do these things. This parable is one of several illustrative stories He tells in response.

Read through the passage.

What are the things that stand out for you about this passage either from reading it tonight or from Sunday’s talk in church?

What does the story tell you about…

… the landowner?

  • What does the landowner do/has the landowner done? (Clue: Isaiah 5:1-7)

  • What should the landowner expect?

  • What is the attitude of the landowner to the way the tenants behave?

… the tenants?

  • What do the tenants think/say/do?

  • What does this tell you about how they see themselves and their relationship with the landowner?

  • How is this surprising / shocking?

… Jesus and the religious leaders?

  • What is the attitude of the religious leaders listening to the way the tenants behave?

  • How does Jesus connect this story to Himself? (Clue: Psalm 118:22-24)

… us?

  • How does the attitude of the landowner make you feel and how might it affect your walk with Jesus? (Clue: where do you put your confidence under pressure? v42/Psalm 80:8-19)

Pray together.
