The Parable of the wedding feast

Jesus is in the middle of a dispute with the religious leaders of His day and is a few days from being arrested, put on trial, and executed. He’s really keen for His followers to understand the difference between the religion they see around them and the Kingdom He’s heralding in. To make sure what He says can be understood by the religious leaders, His disciples and the crowds, He points to prophecies they will know from the Jewish Scriptures (clue - Isaiah 25:6-9).

Read the passage.

What are the things that stand out for you either from reading the passage tonight or from Sunday’s talk in church?

What does the story tell you about…

… the King and His Kingdom?

  • What do people get invited to? (clue - Revelation 19:1-9)

  • Who gets invited?

  • What should the King expect?

… and the guests who ‘ought’ to have been coming?

  • What’s their attitude to the invitation (and the King)?

  • What do you think about this, and what do you think about the King’s reaction?

… what does the King do next?

  • Who does He send invitations to?

  • How odd is that?

  • What about the man in verse 11? What do you understand is happening there?

St Thomas’ is one year old!

How does this story link to our mission of:

  • ‘Following Jesus’ (clue: Galatians 3:27; Romans 13:14)

  • ‘Building community’ (clue: Matthew 18:11; Galatians 3:28)

  • ‘Loving Newcastle’ (clue: John 12:32 – as a Resourcing Church)

Who are we in this parable and how does that make you feel/what does it prompt you to want to do?

Pray together.
