Genesis 24:34-67
Over the faithful family series, we have followed the life of Abraham from Genesis 18 - Genesis 24.
Where have we seen God’s faithfulness to Abraham?
Can you share where you have seen God’s faithfulness in your own life?
In response to God’s faithfulness, Abraham grows to be more obedient to God’s call on his life; he knows that God is trustworthy and steadfast and his unswerving obedience is a fruit of this knowledge.
What is God calling you to?
What do you need to do to be obedient to this call?
Do you have a testimony of when you have been obedient to God’s call and have seen his faithfulness in your life? This could be with your choice of university, joining this church plant at St Thomas’, in your job etc.
God’s consistent faithfulness to Abraham affects all of Abraham’s family too. His servant has seen God’s faithfulness throughout Abraham’s life and knows that he serves a God who listens to and answers prayer. In verses 42 - 45, we see the prayer that the servant prays to ask for God’s help and guidance. This prayer is the kind of prayer that Jesus talks about in Luke 11:9-13 - praying with shameless audacity, knowing that whoever asks receives and whoever seeks finds.
What is bold and audacious about the servant’s prayer?
What do we need to be more bold in praying about?
This story also points to Jesus: Like Isaac and Rebekah’s marriage, he offers us a committed relationship with him in which he will love us and walk with us faithfully. The Bible also uses the symbolism of a well - a spring of water. Water is used to symbolise life. This symbolism starts on the very first pages of the Bible when the Garden of Eden springs up from a stream, and we ourselves are made from this fertile, watered land. The water imagery starts to make really clear sense in John 4 when Jesus describes himself as “living water”. This ‘marriage’ relationship that Jesus offers us is much more than just a simple commitment; it brings us life in all its fullness!
What parallels can you see between the marriage of Isaac and Rebekah and our relationship with Jesus?
The bible uses water throughout to symbolise life. What is the significance of the well in this passage and how does it link to Jesus as “living water”?
Pray together.
