Discussion

Jesus really is coming back

In the new creation, heaven and earth will no longer be separate realms, but rather will be perfectly united, where God will dwell with us.

  • How does this challenge your idea of what ‘heaven’ is like?

God’s commitment to this earth should increase our commitment to where he has placed us.

  • Where are you tempted to wish away your life?

  • Where do you need to re-commit to where God has called you to be?

Jesus really is making all things new

Jerusalem (representing the whole earth) is going to be wholly renewed with a heavenly re-design. There will be a new world order, free of tears, pain and mourning. You also will be free of sin, suffering and pain when you are completely renewed. You can have certainty that you will one day (and then eternally) be free from sin and suffering.

  • What difference will this make to how you fight sin and embrace suffering now

Jesus really wants you to be there

Though we (as those listed in verse 8) do not at all deserve to live in the New Creation, Jesus has made a way for us through his death and resurrection. He is not only the reason that you are invited to the New Creation, but enjoying Him is the central aim of the New Creation.

  • When you envisage the new heavens and new earth, is Jesus at the centre? Or is He, in your mind, just one good thing amongst many for you to enjoy?

  • Since the only thing stopping us from enjoying the New Creation (our sin) has already been fully paid for, how can we step into greater love and worship of Jesus now, as a dress rehearsal of what is to come in eternity?

Prayer

Pray for one another that you would be excited by (and not fearful of) an eternity spent in worship of Jesus.

Pray that you would each fall more greatly in love with Jesus now, and that as you fix your eyes on Him and his new creation, the things of this world would, indeed, grow strangely dim.
