Romans 8:12-25 | Child of God

Activity

Give each child a piece of paper and on each piece of paper have them draw, colour and decorate members of their family, friends and church family. Connect all the papers of family pictures and hang on the room wall. Write FAMILY OF GOD above the family figures.

Something for the whole family

You’ll need blank cards (or plain card) and envelopes, coloured pens/pencils, lots of nice card decorations, glue (if necessary), stamps (optional).

Ask the children to think about who else is in God’s family besides themselves. You might like to make a list together. Say that when we are a family, it’s good to encourage one another and let one another know that we care.

You are going to make a card for someone else in God’s family and write a message inside that lets them know that you are glad you are part of God’s family with them. There might be other messages that you want to write too.

Let the children create beautiful cards and help them to write appropriate messages. Help the children to think about how they will get the card to its recipient – especially if they are outside of the group.

Questions to talk through together

  • What does “adopted” mean?

  • If you were alone, describe the family you would want.

  • Knowing you’re a child of God, does this make you think/act differently?

  • How can you remember in day to day life that you are a child of God?

A short prayer

Dear God, Thank you that we are adopted into your family. Thank you for loving us so much. Please help us to remember we are a child of God in all situations. When things are good or bad we pray we would remember how great you are and how great your love for us is. Amen.

Prayer time

Take a pack of cards and lay them face down. Take it in turns to take a card off the top of the pile and pray using these guidelines:

Red number card - Thank you prayer

Black number card - Sorry or please prayer

King card - Think of a word that describes God and how great He is

Queen card - Pray for someone who is female

Jack card - Pray for someone who is male
